China shows its color in Hong Kong, disqualified 12 pro-democracy candidates

The Hong Kong government on Thursday disqualified 12 pro-democracy candidates for contesting because of opposition to China’s new national security law.

The disqualified candidates include pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong, some members of the Citizens Party, a liberal candidate, and other members who won the unofficial primary vote held by the opposition camp last month.

The move by the Hong Kong government is an attempt to suppress the supporters of democracy, a month after China enacted the National Security Act. The Hong Kong government said that even more people could be disqualified further. Hong Kong’s move could also increase China’s confrontation with the West. Critics believe that the government has taken the move to prevent the younger generation from moving ahead after a vigorous victory by the supporters of democracy in the district council elections last year.
