America on defense procurement from Russia - we will not take any action that affects India

Regarding an important defense deal between India and Russia, the US said that it would not take any action that would affect India. A senior official close to US President Donald Trump said that the Trump administration does not want to make a decision that would impair India's defense capabilities of its major defense partners.
In fact, the officials were referring to the Countering America's Advertising Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), which prohibits significant defense purchases from Russia and in doing so imposes sanctions on the country concerned.

The US had earlier said that it is helping many countries, including India, to identify and avoid potential restrictive activities under CAATSA.

India and Russia signed a five billion dollar S-400 air defense system deal in October 2018, following several negotiations between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Asked about the implications of the purchase of the S-400 missile defense system from Russia, the official said, "I know that India has expressed reasonable concerns ... it does not want to stop it completely. He is our principal partner and we do not want that to happen to him. We do not want to reduce their defense capabilities.

The US said that such a large purchase comes under the purview of CAATSA sanctions and under which action was taken against Turkey. The S-400 is Russia's most modern long-range surface-to-air missile defense system. China first purchased this system in 2014.
