Police have intensified investigations into the tragic case of the bodies of 39 people being recovered from a truck container near a port in Britain. Essex police said the victims were believed to be Chinese citizens, although its embassy said the nationality of the bodies was still being confirmed.

Police said the bodies of 31 men and eight women were found in a truck early Wednesday in an industrial park located 40 kilometers from London. A magistrate has given investigators another 24 hours to question the truck driver. The driver is a 25-year-old young man from Northern Ireland who has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Charges have not yet been framed against him and the police have not revealed his name.

Essex Police Deputy Chief Pippa Mills said the process of conducting a post-mortem and identifying the victims would be "lengthy and complicated." He said, "This is a very sensitive and high profile investigation and we are trying to find out as soon as possible how these people died."

Essex Police said that the victims are believed to be Chinese citizens. Its embassy in London said in a statement released on the website on Friday morning that police were still verifying the identity of the victims and that their nationality had not been confirmed. Earlier police had said that the truck came from Bulgaria and entered the country on Saturday via Holyhead. Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted that he was hurt by the tragic incident and committed to finding out the real facts of the incident.
